The No. 1 Northeast Community College men’s soccer team began its postseason playoff run Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk.

The Hawks defeated North Iowa Area Community College 6-0 in the Region 11 tournament quarterfinals.

Northeast (18-1, 8-0 ICCAC) found the back of the net three times by the 30th minute.

Coach Adam Potter on his team grabbing its first postseason win of the season:

“Any day you can get a playoff win is a great day,” Potter said. “We also got assistant coach Jesus Santos his first playoff win during his history of being in America, so we can’t complain about that either.”

Potter on what is ahead Wednesday in another showdown with Marshalltown:

“We are very excited to play Marshalltown,” Potter said. “They are very tactically sound and very organized. It’s going to be a fun one. It was a great battle when we were in Marshalltown earlier this year and I expect the same when they come here. I think it is going to be a high-tempo, high-pace kind of game and we are definitely excited for that challenge ahead.”

The Hawks will welcome Marshalltown Community College to town for the Region 11 tournament semifinals at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park.

THE NO. 5 women’s soccer team blanked Scott Community College 14-0 in quarterfinal action of the Region 11 tournament at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk on Saturday.

Nine different players scored, including three by Carly Schaad, for Northeast (16-1-1, 7-0-1 ICCAC).

Goalkeeper Hannah Thornell (Auckland, New Zealand) didn’t have to make a single save in the showdown.

Coach Chad Miller on securing the victory to move on in the tournament:

“I was really happy with our response to instruction today,” Miller said. “When we needed to make changes to our play, the girls did it. They adapted quickly and played off what they saw. That was great stuff.”

Miller on the upcoming battle with Iowa Lakes:

“Tuesday will be a tough match and the turnaround time is fast,” Miller said. “We need to take care of ourselves physically and get ourselves ready mentally. Success will come hard, but I believe these girls can find it.”

The Hawks will host Iowa Lakes Community College in the Region 11 tournament semifinals at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Park.
